brown bullet 3rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Gene Therapy (2000)
ASGT held its third annual meeting in the "mile high city" Denver, Colorado, USA, late May - early June, 2000. The meeting was, again, a great success with almost 1000 abstracts submitted and the number of participants significantly larger than in the previous meeting.

All the attendees had to agree that ASGT meeting is going to be the choice, if one can afford to go to only a single gene therapy meeting per year. This meeting is not about skiing or having parties together, it's about cutting edge science in the fields of gene transfer research and gene therapy.

As you remember, earlier this year FGTS gave three 6500 FIM travel grants to its junior members for attending the ASGT meeting. Click the following links to read the travel reports by the winners: Hanna Kallionpää, Kuopio, Pauliina Lehtolainen, Kuopio, Tanja Rauma, Oulu.

brown bullet 4th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Gene Therapy
ASGT held its fourth annual meeting again in Seattle, WA, USA, late May - early June, 2001. The meeting was this year bigger and bolder than ever (more than 2000 attendees and almost 1200 scientific presentations), although many of us thought that this year's meeting may remembered later as "the one with no big thrills". Nevertheless, the science was again very high-quality and the meeting offered the best possible venue to meet colleagues and figure out, what is the cutting edge of gene therapy right now.

This year FGTS gave four 6500 FIM travel grants to its members for attending the ASGT meeting. We are very grateful to our corporate sponsors Valentis, Aventis Pharma, Leiras, Novartis Finland and Schering, who made this support possible. Due to unusually low number of applications this year, only two members of FGTS were awarded. Tanja Hakkarainen and Juha Rutanen, both students from the A.I.Virtanen Institute's Graduate School, Kuopio, received 1100 Euro grants to attend the 5th ASGT meeting in Boston. brown bullet 6th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Gene Therapy
The sixth ASGT meeting took place in June 2003 in Washington, DC. The growth of this conference appeared to be leveling off along with more fluent organization and friendlier program structure. Let's hope that meeting would stay on that level, both in quantity and in quality. The summary of the meeting can be found in http://www.asgt.org/asgtnews03.pdf

This years travel grants (1100 Euro) were awarded to Johanna Markkanen (A.I. Virtanen Institute, University of Kuopio) and Anna Kanerva (Biomedicum, University of Helsinki. Click the names to read their travel reports
